But I have been feeling so incredibly stir crazy this winter since I can barely ever go outside (that is what the idea of what feels like -100 degree weather will do to you)! So because I have been locked up in the house I have decided to get back to work with easy projects that can be done without having to use my saw, stain, or any other outdoor product. I have two really bad orange/yellow laminate countertops upstairs that I just could not take anymore. I decided to paint them. I am not going to do a tutorial today, but lets just say that I am glad that I did this and now this summer I am for sure going to do my kitchen countertops, that is how much I love how these turned out. I just primed, painted a base coat, and did a lot of sponge layers of about 5 or six colors. I sealed one of them with a polycrylic but I don't love the top coat so tonight I am going to use Envirotex lite to finish off the bathroom countertops. I AM IN LOVE WITH THE BATHROOM COUNTERTOPS and I suggest everyone that can't afford new countertops to do this, it is SOOOOOOO scary at first but SOOOOOOOO easy and there really is no need to be scared!!
At 16 w was told it was more likely a girl...... All these pics were from my scan that was done between 14-15 weeks.
My Rags to Richeshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01013068629549156902noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3316931792543341216.post-8097442033575501082013-01-13T14:46:00.001-08:002013-01-13T15:33:07.929-08:00Painting Kitchen CabinetsAfter begging, pleading, and tricking my husband, I finally got my wish and got the go ahead to paint the kitchen cabinets!!! We have lived in this house for 1.5 years and I have wanted to paint them since day 1!!! This house needed a make over from head to toe (and still does) but every improvement I did to this house, made these atrocious poop brown cabinets stand out even more. In my eyes even if I screwed up the paint job and had drip marks and brush strokes everywhere, it couldn't possibly be worse than what it was. I don't really feel like I need to do a big tutorial because there are SO many cabinet painting tutorials out there. The quick run down of what I did was.....

Lightly sanded everything down with electric hand sander, wiped it all down and then did 3 (because I was determined for it not to chip) thin coats of primer then I waited 24 hours and painted my cabinets with a color match of BM White Dove in Cabinet Finish paint. I waited 7 hours between each coat and I applied 3 coats. I waited 24 hours then hung everything back up! I also primed and painted all my hardware with oil rubbed bronze paint. I didn't feel like the Oil Rubbed Bronze paint really looked like oil rubbed bronze, it looked like a speckled black, so I got some metallic craft paint in copper and rubbed that on and now no one would know they were even painted, it looks great. However, I do not like the look and shape of my hardware, it looks way too dated, so I ordered some pulls on amazon and I am still waiting to get them. I will also put them on the drawers too so they don't look so plain! I love love love how much brighter and happy my kitchen feels!!!!

This is the before pic

I still have some decorating to do but I am so so much happier in my kitchen now!! If this house wasn't a transitional home, I would think of installing new countertops and a new sink and faucet too, but it isn't worth the time and $$$ as we will be selling in a few years and we don't want to price ourselves out of this old neighborhood by doing granite and apron sinks ect.......Yay for a lighter kitchen

We woke up early, ran to the store to buy Ethan some new shoes because I forgot to buy him school shoes (I'm on a roll) after getting him home, he took a bath, brushed his teeth and got all dressed for school. We went outside and snapped a few "First Day of School" pictures and then ate some lunch. We went upstairs knelt down and said a prayer together, just the two of us so he would have that little extra comfort about his first day of school. I told him how excited I was for him and that I knew he would do so GREAT in school! I could see and feel his excitement grow with each task we checked off of our list! Finally, it was time to go outside and wait for the bus to pick us up, I was holding back the tears and he was holding back his excitement (as best a 5 year old can). Just as bus time was inching up on us, our neighbor and all her kids, who should be in school because they are in older grades, came out of her house. They quickly informed us that school starts tomorrow not today!!!! In all the craziness of getting ready for school I must have read the date wrong!!! I felt so bad for Ethan, he was so super excited, but he is a sweet good little boy. I could tell he was EXTREMELY let down but he just hugged me and with a quivering voice said, "It's ok mom we will just do it all again tomorrow.........but maybe not all the pictures." What a cute awesome little boy I have!!! He was so let down, but he could tell how bad I felt for getting his hopes up that he tried really hard to not show his disappointment!!! I love this little boy so so so much!

Here are a few of our pics from this morning, I think that even though the date will be wrong by a day, I'm not going to redo these. He was such a trooper! I got the idea for these potos on Pinterest and I wasn't in the mood to try to be creative and come up with my own ideas! Isn't he so handsome???
Ok so I have another table done. Some of you might remember that I painted this table, but I was never really happy with it for a number of reasons, it wasn't the look I was going for, and there were problems with the structure of the table that drove me nuts. So when my neighbor offered me this table for free before she hauled it to the dump, (I forgot to take a picture of the before so I found this on the internet, the only difference is the legs aren't an exact match, but other than that, this is exactly what the table looked like, I even have those chairs sitting in my garage)

I snatched it up before she finished the question. I sanded the table down, used wood conditioner on it before I stained it, stained it with Minwax Dark Walnut then put 3 coats (sanding between each) of poly (thinned out with mineral spirits so I wouldn't have those nasty brush strokes or bubbles). I then painted the skirt and legs with Heirloom White paint and glazed it all so the wood match the chairs I upholstered a while back.

I love this new table but can't decide on the table runner or centerpiece. But the beauty of that is I can change it as much as I would like!! Slowly but surely my house is coming together.

I am still trying to convince my husband that painting the cabinets would be awesome. Actually when I close my eyes and picture my kitchen, I picture white cabinets with Dark Walnut stained butcher block counter tops. My problem is right now, this nook that I love and worked so hard for does not fit in my kitchen. The kitchen and nook seem like two different spaces... First you have this...

Then you turn around and have this....

(this is actually an old picture from the previous owner, the floor isn't like that, and I now have a beadboard backsplash)

They don't work with one another. Wouldn't white cabinets and butcher block countertops just bring it all together???? I am really really really working hard on him. He just has this huge fear of painting cabinets.
So I am really excited to have this done! Things around this house have slowed down as far as projects and home renovations because my poor little 3 year old Liam, broke his elbow and had to have surgery. It was a really bad break and the healing process has been a doosie!! He has been in constant pain. He just got his cast off, but now will need to have physical therapy for at least a year because he doesn't have the ability to move his middle and index fingers, and he has severe nerve pain in his thumb, middle, and index fingers. So needless to say, he requires a lot of attention and help because he basically only has one hand.......It has been rough!

With that said :( lets get back to the nook. My plan is, and has always been, to paint things with the intent to convince my husband that painting our kitchen cabinets would look nice and be a GOOD THING. I think I made a lot of head way with this nook, because it looks flawless (not to toot my own horn)! We started with a cheapo bench and a craigslist table ($25) we have had it like this for months now and every morning I would walk in the kitchen and cringe at the sight of all my miss matched ugly out dated brown in my kitchen. Now I at least have one pretty corner to look at. I simply painted the chairs and the pedestal of the table gray (with my new cheap paint sprayer that I love) and the top of the table and the bench white. However, I felt it was a little too boring so I came up with something fun. I decided to paint the leaf of the table gray too, that way it could give the table fun character and sort of camouflage the lines of the leaf (when the table is all white with the leaf in, there are two black lines that stick out like a sore thumb) also, it can sort of serve as a table runner too. Either way, I really really like it and I am super happy with it. I bought a yard of burlap for $2.50 and made some quick pillow covers and cut a square for my center piece. Now my walls behind the nook are bare, this I am very aware of and I have a plan to build a shelf that wraps around the corner so it stretches across both walls, I am really excited for my final nook reveal, but it will be a while as I still have a hurt little boy to tend to.
I have to say my favorite part is the gray leaf!!!!!
I CONCEDE, I am not super mom, I know it is shocking to hear....I'm just your average everyday momma who has too much on her plate, so something has to give. So I will continue my blog and post pics and a short story for each, to keep tabs on what is going on all the way out here in Ohio!!!

With that said, I found both this chair and desk on craigslist, Mark really needs a desk for his stuff and to occasionally use for studying, I don't like clutter, (either does Mark) so I was set on a roll top desk so we could close it, hide the crap, and keep baby's and little boy fingers out of our important stuff. I sanded, primed and painted it, then got new knobs at Hobby Lobby, and painted the other hardware, Oh and I used spray adhesive to put scrapbook paper of vintage writing as a "backsplash" or whatever you might call it. Then I painted and reupholstered the chair. Here she sits in the garage, waiting for Mark to come home and help me move it into the house. Overall, I'm pretty happy with it!! <img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-FgqxQXIXQg0/T34k1IrpAcI/AAAAAAAABLk/_8EZUV6pIqs/s320/IMG_0363.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5728056271344042434" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 261px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-TZ9WUjGi40M/T34k04lQQZI/AAAAAAAABLY/ApuLx6SbxcI/s320/IMG_0422.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5728056267022287250" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ARNgOpk-lCA/T34k06Ray2I/AAAAAAAABLM/2lSR6U6Kky8/s320/IMG_0398.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5728056267475962722" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-OhVqEtijT4o/T34k0ueIYPI/AAAAAAAABLA/1UzpJzb4Ajg/s320/IMG_0432.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5728056264308056306" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-N9iXoauSQRM/T34k0ZZSwUI/AAAAAAAABK0/9vvMRUsUaII/s320/IMG_0434.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5728056258650620226" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 200px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-xi5uldJUzpQ/T34k_ZtJrhI/AAAAAAAABLw/HVy_QbEIezo/s320/Recently%2BUpdated3.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5728056447712472594" />My Rags to Richeshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01013068629549156902noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3316931792543341216.post-51555109718225762772012-02-08T06:20:00.000-08:002012-02-08T06:23:12.647-08:00VacationMy Blog (I am) taking a break for a bit.......We are taking a much needed VACATION/TRIP back to Utah to visit friends and family. I actually have a few small crafting projects that I might do with my friend or my sister in law, but if I don't, that is ok because I'm not going to work, I'm going for the purpose of spending time with AWESOME PEOPLE!!My Rags to Richeshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01013068629549156902noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3316931792543341216.post-64658156669868366042012-01-25T07:36:00.000-08:002012-01-25T10:43:24.838-08:00Painting a FREE Chair!!<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 200px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-j6kN8RG-Xdk/TyBAaEhyrtI/AAAAAAAABJU/H04pwxe0c_s/s320/Collages2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5701627944887299794" />
I know, I know.....ANOTHER CHAIR!!! But hey, when we moved in the previous owner left a bunch of them and I couldn't help myself. So anyhow, she left this wingback chair, who doesn't love a wingback chair? The problem I had was that it was an outdated burgundy 1990's color (not to offend anyone who has one, or loves that color, but it is just not for me)! Now we all know I love to reupholster chairs, but I thought that taking on a wingback for the first time, wasn't something I was ready to do. So I had a problem,....A chair that wasn't my style and what to do with it.....I came across this post about using paint and a textile medium!! Hey why not, the chair was free and anything would be better than it's current state! So I ran to Hobby Lobby, bought textile medium and two bottles of black acrylic paint (I didn't want to try and go lighter because I was sure that would end in heartbreak and a lot of frustration and tears). I mixed according to the textile medium directions and then watered it down to just a little thicker than water consistency, took a foam brush and went to town!!!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-nb35DPvC4CA/TyBBHyHEmBI/AAAAAAAABJg/j4ClaENStjw/s320/IMG_1019.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5701628730217371666" />

It was really easy and the final product speaks for itself. I really hope it lasts though! It did turn out a little stiffer than it was, but it's a fair trade for how much better it looks. Plus I'm hoping that after a little time and wear, it will soften up! It is definitely not as stiff as it would have been had I not used the textile medium. I still need to make a pillow for this chair for now I just stole the pillow I made for the chair I reupholstered downstairs)

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-p9vqp21TJwQ/TyBBH5vI-9I/AAAAAAAABJo/HynVdyw1Vk0/s320/photo%2B%25285%2529.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5701628732264479698" />

I'm working on trying to get the nailhead trim to work. The nails don't reach the wood so it falls out. I could hot glue or super glue them, but I don't know how they will hold up. Well see......My Rags to Richeshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01013068629549156902noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3316931792543341216.post-29173973584137496952012-01-12T17:53:00.001-08:002012-01-12T19:56:18.658-08:00Cafe Rio Sweet Pork SaladOk so I know that this blog is for documenting my home DIY projects, BUT I don't think anyone will complain that I am craving Cafe Rio right now, so I decided to post this. I didn't make this tonight because my husband is on night float and I don't ever see him, and 2 of my 3 boys are sick.... I just found myself thinking of all the yummy food I wished I could be eating right now. Unfortunately, Cafe Rio kept popping into my head. I say unfortunately because we don't have Cafe Rio out here!!! To make a long story short, I'm just reposting a post I did on our family blog (which is on private settings do to spammers) a while back, It is resparking my love and I WILL make it again in a few weeks when we have dinner guests over. If I have any readers who don't know what Cafe Rio is or have never tried it, YOU WILL LOVE THIS.....MAKE IT TONIGHT, AND YOU WILL BE A CAFE RIO BELIEVER FOR LIFE!!!

My husband and I love the Sweet Pork Salad from Café Rio. I did some looking around and found some close recipe's and then tweaked them a bit to get a salad that tastes EXACTLY like Café Rio's.

Sweet Pork

1 pork roast (2-3lbs)
salt & pepper
1 garlic clove (minced)
water
enchilada sauce (to taste)
brown sugar (to taste)
2 cans Dr. Pepper
1 small can green chilies

Salt and pepper roast to taste, put roast and garlic in a crockpot, add water (fill a small crockpot about half full) and cook on low for about 5 hours. Remove roast, drain water (and remove any fat or drippings), and return roast to crock pot. Add 1 can of Dr. Pepper and 1/2 c. of brown sugar (to start off with). Let roast cook on low 3 more hours (at this point you can pull your pork apart, break it into 3 or 4 chunks but don't shred or pull it completely). Transfer roast (including any liquid) to a large skillet and pull apart. At this point it all becomes your tastes. Add green chilies, enchilada sauce, more brown sugar and Dr. Pepper (obviously the more b. sugar and Dr. Pepper you add the sweeter it is and by adding more enchilada sauce it becomes less sweet).

Rice

4 t chicken bouillon
4 t garlic –minced
½ bunch cilantro
1 can green chiles—or equivalent fresh
¾ t salt
1 T butter
½ onion

Chop cilantro and onions (very fine). Add all ingredients with your rice and make your rice according to your rice package (make 3-4 servings).

Café Rio (Yummy) Tomatillo Dressing

1 buttermilk ranch dressing packet (make as per recipe, reduce buttermilk and mayo by 3/4 c if you want a thicker dressing)
2 tomatillos (I like to use 3 for a little more tomatillo flavor)
½ bunch of cilantro
1 clove garlic
Juice of 1 lime
1 jalapeño (remove seeds if you don't want it spicy)

Put all ingredients in food processor or blender and then refrigerate for at least 30 min so dressing can thicken.

Extra Things Needed
Black beans, Tortillas, Guacamole, Pico de gallo, Cheese, and Romaine lettuce

Okay those are the main ingredients. I bought some tins from the store (so it would really feel like Café Rio), and wrap style tortillas (I used sun dried tomato wrap tortillas because they are really thin like Café Rio's tortillas). Sprinkle a little cheese on the tortillas and then warm in the oven (just until cheese is beginning to melt), remove and place in tin, add rice some black beans, and pork. Top with lettuce, pico de gallo, guacamole, slice of lime, and tortilla strips ( couldn't find any so I made my own). Put as much or as little of the tomatillo dressing as you like and ENJOY!!!!

My husband absolutely loved every bite!

Also if you want to be a real go getter you can make your own tortillas, I found this on pintrest

My Rags to Richeshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01013068629549156902noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3316931792543341216.post-49749151403981568942012-01-11T10:10:00.000-08:002012-01-11T10:46:52.895-08:00Never Pass Up an Old Ugly Chair!!!<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 200px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-8Bj4NznI8mM/Tw3SwGirCMI/AAAAAAAABJI/7ot7lTEeuqo/s320/2012-01-11.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5696440827525138626" />
Ok ok, my husband may disagree with the title of this post because I am acquiring quite a collection downstairs in our basement, but seriously this is one of the cheapest things in the world!!! Find FREE chairs, they seem to be everywhere, curbs, craigslist, or already in your home. And we ALL have old drapes, dresses, or table clothes that can be used instead of thrown out! I am a firm believer in working with what you got! Sure some times I really want a nice chair so I have to buy things like trim and fabric (for my last chair) but still it can be done very inexpensively!! With this chair (free because it was left here by the previous owner of our new home), it only took as much time as it takes for a can of paint to dry!! I found a can of spray paint that I already had and used some old curtains that I had made when my 5 year old was a baby! I gave the old chair a coat of paint and while I waited for it to dry I reupholstered the chair (I will be doing a tutorial on this later in the week and once you can reupholster 1 chair, you can do almost any simple chair).My Rags to Richeshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01013068629549156902noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3316931792543341216.post-42173107724783877302012-01-09T11:43:00.000-08:002012-01-12T11:47:58.329-08:00NailHead Trim Chair For $10<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 253px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-OIO3xJynDaQ/TwtKdmdVfGI/AAAAAAAABIs/uqtA_sNEM6U/s320/photo-23.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5695728026140376162" />
So I will post a tutorial on this chair and maybe even the pillow a little later in the week. I was just so excited to be done with this chair because I really love it!! I got the chair for free, the previous owner of our new home left it here. The fabric was from Walmart at $1.50 a yard and I used 2 yards ($3.00 for fabric). The nailhead trim was $18 bucks for 10 yards but I only used 2 yards ($3.60 for trim) I had the paint and primer on hand already. The fabric for the pillow was also $1.50/yd and I used 2 yards. The actual pillow was just an old bed pillow we had that I cut to size! Seriously it is so fun to try and make or repurpose things for as cheap as possible!!! I lOVE IT!!!
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 242px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-bH2V5La_noU/TwtKdmQeuyI/AAAAAAAABIk/uzARUeiDWUE/s320/photo-25.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5695728026086456098" />
Here is a cropped close up, sorry about the poor quality, I'm only able to use my cell phone at the moment!
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 254px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-7_hvJTJeKnU/Twt8K95NwgI/AAAAAAAABI8/8_4LYC6JfgA/s320/photo-26.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5695782681595200002" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 200px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-fholsyXo8rY/TwtFmyKw7fI/AAAAAAAABIY/azBNOMVpxis/s320/2012-01-09.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5695722686344392178" />

My Rags to Richeshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01013068629549156902noreply@blogger.com14tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3316931792543341216.post-71700744698033850122011-12-30T18:41:00.000-08:002011-12-30T20:16:17.517-08:00Virtually Free Pillow!So I've mentioned many times that we are basically on a pennies budget for redoing this old house. Everything I do to this house must be done with as little money as possible. Now, I do not know if part of this technique has already been used out there in blog land, but I think I came up with something brilliant (I'm sure I'm not the first though). So we really need some throw pillows for our couch and the chair I am in the process of reupholstering but even if I buy the most inexpensive, they seem to be at least $10 or more and the cheap ones generally don't go with my style. I saw a few different pillow covers I wanted to try that I saw floating around in blog world but I didn't have any pillows to cover. Then it hit me, my 3 year old son has an old pillow he refuses to use since he got a few drops of blood on it during a bloody nose episode. I was just going to chuck it......but wait, what if I cut it in half??? I would have two rectangular pillows that I could cover for my couch or chair. So last night after the boys were fast asleep, I cut the old pillow in half, made a quick pillow cover, flipped it inside out and sewed some strategic pinches to give it the gathered look. The best part is that this pillow was virtually free because I used scrap fabric. But it got me excited because I can buy these bed pillows really cheap ($3.50 at Walmart) and my Walmart also has a fabric section, with TONS of solid colors for only $1.50 a yard, I can make 2 pillows for under $10 give or take a little depending on how crazy I get with the fabric!! This really makes me happy!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 242px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Ly-eI7Q59uc/Tv6G8YrTYuI/AAAAAAAABH0/yL-jLk4hk7k/s320/image.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5692135351017235170" />

My Rags to Richeshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01013068629549156902noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3316931792543341216.post-38860897930549354112011-12-27T15:16:00.000-08:002011-12-29T12:50:31.892-08:00Next ProjectSo having two birthdays, and Christmas has kept me busy so I have put the house stuff on hold. I also have this thing about the cold, I DONT LIKE IT! I find it really hard to motivate myself when it is so gray, gloomy, and cold. I have so much to do, but it requires working out in the unheated garage so for now, it will stay undone, unless someone can light a fire under me (ooooh that would be warm)!! Well I found a project that I can do inside and it is going to be virtually free!! It's great. When we moved here, the previous owner left a handful of chairs, so I am going to refinish this one...........
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-34wwzfwhYnY/TvpV-ZTn58I/AAAAAAAABFo/bHG941R6sYo/s320/photo-23.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5690955609569486786" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-5V_IHaIAeb4/TvpV-KIQrFI/AAAAAAAABFg/v6IA8ZrtHxQ/s320/photo-22.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5690955605495295058" />
(Sad, look how empty my house is I can't wait until I can furnish and decorate it, but it takes time, when you have to refinish every piece because you got it free from craigslist or the side of the curb, so far the most expensive thing I've purchased was an $80 bench for my kitchen nook)

Yay, I am so excited, actually I am probably already half way done with her and she is a beauty! The chair was free, the paint was already on hand and I got the fabric for $3 and the trim for $5 so when all is said and done this chair will be refinished for under $10....I LOVE IT!My Rags to Richeshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01013068629549156902noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3316931792543341216.post-8579308944473488712011-12-05T06:13:00.000-08:002011-12-05T07:39:55.105-08:00Birthday Cake TimeSo I had to take a break from all the house stuff because my little guys keep growing and having birthdays, dang it!!!! Why can't they just stay little and innocent forever?? Well, I have this thing where I HAVE to MAKE their birthday cakes instead of buying them, and EVERY year I ask myself WHY????? I don't think that cake decorating comes naturally to me because I am not an extremely patient or detail oriented person and I think you need to be both to be a great cake decorator. Well none the less, I decided to keep with tradition and make their cakes (but this time I did them on the same day so they could have a combined party. My 3 year old's birthday was mid November, and my other little guy turns 5 in mid December). For now I don't think I'll do a detailed tutorial, because I am still in burnout mode but I will give the basic steps of each cake.
First the Angry Birds Cake, this one was actually quite simple, just a little time consuming. I made about 5 or 6 batches of marshmallow fondant (to use for both cakes, it's always better to have too much than too little) I then separated the fondant and made all the different colors I would be needing, then I went to town playing with the fondant like it was playdough and just had fun with it.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-pBVcMwYejDI/Ttzdfh5zDtI/AAAAAAAABC8/fY03gkVrO3E/s320/photo-19.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5682660363581198034" />
Ok my boys probably wouldn't say that I had fun with it because I get a bit stressed and was pretty grouchy when they tried to play with everything I made. Once I finished all the fondant birds and pigs I covered them and started working on the Lightning McQueen Cake, I stacked the previously baked and frozen cakes (layer of frosting in between to hold them together) and then attempted to carve the cake into the shape of Lightning McQueen, using a couple of my sons cars as a model.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-LoQLWvGPivw/TtzdfhhXpzI/AAAAAAAABC0/L7SyUhdfIGk/s320/photo-18.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5682660363478738738" />
I say attempt because the boys were really up in my business at this time trying to "help" I was so stressed out that mommy the "grouch" kept coming out. At this point I decided to put it back in the freezer and wait til the boys went to bed. Once the coast was clear and I could work in peace and that is what I did, I finished carving the cake, frosting it

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-21OEh_pjQZ8/TtzdfKQgvoI/AAAAAAAABCs/ov7XdQA567o/s320/photo-17.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5682660357234015874" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-D26nlTWsR-4/Ttzde7qUUPI/AAAAAAAABCY/dwxdVPKBcuw/s320/photo-16.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5682660353315721458" />
and putting on the red fondant, then I added chocolate donuts for the wheels and decorated the cake board and called it a night.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-vyEqXBfNkTs/TtzdehPle2I/AAAAAAAABCQ/NtgO_2uJDsI/s320/photo-15.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5682660346224278370" />
The next morning I assembled the Angry Birds onto a cake.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-vuh2TCURvKI/TtzeViUqFuI/AAAAAAAABDM/3MRC-E1KWSI/s320/photo-20.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5682661291406792418" />

Don't let me fool you by making this sound simple, it was not and thats why I still don't have energy for a full tutorial but the boys were so happy and loved their cakes and had a great party (except they missed their grandmas and cousins....sad)! I found plenty of different ideas on different blogs, and it seems that everyone was using Looking Glass paint on the inside of a vase or candle stick, so I did the same, after 5 coats had dried, I sprayed a little vinegar and water solution on the paint, took a cotton ball and dabbed to remove a little of the paint. I wasn't super happy with the look, I thought it was too 1 dimensional so I took some copper metallic acrylic paint, added a tiny bit of water and swirled it around the inside and let it dry, this is what I ended up with, and I do like it a lot.My Rags to Richeshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01013068629549156902noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3316931792543341216.post-84429463162569707012011-11-14T06:51:00.000-08:002011-11-14T07:50:28.196-08:00Table Redo with Rust-Oleum Cabinet TransformationsOk so this took me a while to do and post about, because this house is one big project, and I find that I work on what my 3 little boys will let me work on each day, so sometimes I'm working on the floor or table because they are otherwise occupied and they don't care what I am doing (during the baby's nap) or sometimes they need me to be by them so I work on little projects I can do in the toy room or tv room and still be near them. This table didn't turn out as I had hoped, but it will do and I think once my walls aren't bare it will all come together.
So I started with this very boring table that we have had for years, I wanted to stain it a beautiful dark mahogany, I thought it would be a breeze because I have worked with this stain on furniture before, and I love how it turns out.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-WlsAS9F6Yno/TsEz93oVKbI/AAAAAAAAA8k/LdCeVPhhOow/s320/photo-4-1.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5674874143461681586" />
So I started off deglossing the whole table and then sanded it down really good. I filled the ugly cracks and blemishes with wood filler then sanded it down one more time, I used a Minwax wood conditioner over the whole table because I really wanted a uniform look. Then it was time to stain. Staining can be messy, but in general it is pretty darn easy......apply, wait 5-15 minutes, then wipe off. WELL.......This time it wasn't so easy, it was a big FAT FAIL!!! The wood stained so terribly blotchy that there was no way to fix it, and believe me I tried anyway, I tried to do a few more coats, I tried to add more stain to only the light splotchy areas, I even tried to blend it all together by using a glaze, NOTHING!!
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-xzYyE2XHWos/TsEz-TAsvVI/AAAAAAAAA84/idvTRLtonSc/s320/photo-7-1.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5674874150811647314" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-V0_wyQTb5Tc/TsEz-bN2t6I/AAAAAAAAA8s/1KKa41fcaAY/s320/photo-5-1.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5674874153014310818" />
It just seemed to get worse. I realized that I was going to have to paint, then I got a bright idea.......My husband HATES the look of painted cabinets and I've been wanting to redo our cabinets (imagine ugly brown that has been worn down and scratched and the previous owner tried to hide the wear and scratches with a mismatched reddish brown marker) but we don't have money to buy new and he wont paint, so we as of now they stay ugly.... So (back to my bright idea) I decided that I would try the Rust-Oleum Cabinet Transformations on my table so my husband could see that painted wood is not as bad as he thinks...
So following the instructions for redoing cabinets, I went to town on my table.
The end result in my opinion was only OK I guess I was expecting a richer color and more depth once I put the glaze on. Oh well, it will work for now. (click here for tutorial on Upholstered Chairs)
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-GMerCKwouHQ/TsEz9rCIbpI/AAAAAAAAA8U/mbscWgMx3Ro/s320/photo-1-1.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5674874140080238226" />
I had a ton of the cabinet transformation paint left over from my table so I thought I might as well keep going... This time I tried it on an actual cabinet, our bathroom vanity needs to be replaced but we don't have the $$$ right now so why not transform it right??? Well I am so glad I did because I think it turned out much better than the table did. Maybe that is why it is called "Cabinet Transformations" and not "Table Transformations" (sorry about the messy picture, I wasn't planning on this being a before pic)

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-59XfNft_KAA/TsE0iZ1b7lI/AAAAAAAAA9c/dkD5VT-299s/s320/photo-9-1.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5674874771118747218" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-pEJU1L9UNCQ/TsE0iwkUZoI/AAAAAAAAA9o/4diHlFQhUhA/s320/photo-10-1.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5674874777220966018" />
I think I may have gotten a little closer to convincing my husband that painting the old cabinets wont turn out so awful after all.My Rags to Richeshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01013068629549156902noreply@blogger.com11tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3316931792543341216.post-50351740876394797102011-10-27T06:01:00.000-07:002011-10-27T17:12:40.462-07:00FIXING DESTROYED WALLSEVIL EVIL WALLPAPER!!!
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-A4B0lQo8n2Y/TqlmvZBaI4I/AAAAAAAAA50/KIwWslyDHqg/s320/photo-5-1.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5668174570379158402" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-qW2Yvevlp-M/TqljFEp8VTI/AAAAAAAAA5A/ltWoistIKn8/s320/photo-3-1.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5668170544822637874" />
I know I know people say wallpaper is back in style, and I don't doubt it, I actually really love the look of some of the new wallpaper, however, I am posting about old wallpaper that has been up for over 20 years and painted over at least 10 years, what a NIGHTMARE!!! I haven't posted any new tutorials for a long time, because I have spent all my "work time" on these dumb walls. It took me 4 days to remove painted over wallpaper from a small wall behind my door.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 202px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-5xul-5pv_Tw/TqljFC97m1I/AAAAAAAAA4w/lhDX8WW5vC4/s320/photo-2-1.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5668170544369605458" />
Believe me, I tried everything, scoring the paper, using vinegar, DIFF, and I even tried to thin the paint and scrape it off before trying to take the paper off. I did not try to steam it off because of the paint barrier, and I didn't try to use Downy because in my experience with wallpaper (yes I have de-wallpapered an entire house before) Downy doesn't work any better than vinegar. After getting the wallpaper off a quarter size at a time, my walls were absolutely destroyed!!! I wanted to cry, I thought I would just wallpaper over it but my husband hasn't jumped on the new wallpaper band wagon yet ( I might be able to get away with an accent wall or something), so I was either going to have to fix the walls by myself and then be satisfied with visible flaws (because there was no way to get it all patched and looking smooth) or get new drywall. Well remember we are working with an extremely tight budget so getting new drywall was out of the question. I made my way over to the ONLY wallpaper store I have been able to find in the Columbus area to find some wallpaper my husband would be okay with......I found out the store was going out of business in a few weeks so everything was on sale. The problem was I quickly found out why they are going out of business, the only wallpaper they had looked like the wallpaper I was tearing down or wall paper I could find at my grandmother's house, it was terrible!!! I was super bummed and felt defeated, the sales lady was really working hard to sale something to me so just as I was about to leave she said, "Well why don't you line your walls and start fresh??""!!!!!!!! I did a 180!!! I had never heard of liner but after she explained it to me I was sold!!! So i lightly patched and sanded all the flaws in my walls, then I hung the wall liner just like wallpaper. Now the instructions did not say to do this, but i put 2 or 3 layers of spakling over the seam and then sanded it down!!
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-W_FjwlmDL2E/TqljE4b27RI/AAAAAAAAA4o/xEJ9mV0_d5E/s320/photo-1-1.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5668170541542337810" />
I was in love before I even painted the wall, it already looked so much better, so smooth, so clean!!! I then used a latex paint with primer over the liner, I still had to do 3 coats, because the liner soaks the paint in differently than my other walls. The only problem I have now is that this is an old house, now the lined walls look cleaner, crisper, and better than the walls I didn't line, I have an itch to do all the walls in the house, but luckily we are walking on subfloors right now, so I am distracted by other projects!!!
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-hNu3jCa-zjU/TqljFtlYUWI/AAAAAAAAA5M/aK8ueOlC038/s320/photo-4.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5668170555809354082" />

The first 2 pictures on this post are of the walls in my bathroom and the nook in my kitchen, the AFTER pics are still to come because we are still working on those areas!!!

My Rags to Richeshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01013068629549156902noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3316931792543341216.post-58881958422122737642011-10-03T04:47:00.000-07:002011-10-04T02:30:00.058-07:00How To Install Floating/Laminate Floors Yourself!!!<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-oa_u02u9t3o/TonD5OFma2I/AAAAAAAAAz0/_LamZlONrpo/s320/floor.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5659269794569284450" />

Ok so I don't think that any home improvement DIY-er should EVER hire someone to put in their floating/Laminate floors (unless they really don't want to try doing themselves to save time) because it really is very simple. My husband and I were pretty intimidated at first, it just seemed like a really big project and neither of us had ever done anything like it before. Luckily we have made a new awesome friend who has installed them before and he came over to get us started, and lent us his tools and showed us the ropes. We got these super cool dark planks for only $1.10 sq/ft and then had to purchase the foam that goes under it which was only $20 bucks. We were able to do 400 sq/ft for under $600 (that includes tax and extra planks we purchased just incase we need them in the future, we got such a good deal because this was a closeout item).

Ok first off you need the right tools you'll need to buy or borrow a tapping block, a pulling bar, and a table saw. You will also need a hammer and a pencil and that is it!!

The first thing you want to do before starting, is decide what kind of pattern you want your floor to create, there is more thought into this than I had originally realized because you don't want the seams to be too close together but you probably don't want it to look like a brick wall either. First you put your foam down according to the instructions on the packaging. Then you place your first plank in your starting room corner the first couple rows are the hardest because they don't have support of other planks to hold them in place, so this is where having a second person comes in handy, have them stand or kneel on that first plank while you connect the second plank, by matching the tongue and groove and then hammering it into place with a tapping block and hammer
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-jRfC3T5cM3k/TonGIuSRoTI/AAAAAAAAA0k/bFK3gyhrLso/s320/how%2Btoo%2Btool.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5659272259933675826" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-YLXrFxpqeGY/TonD6GvZSmI/AAAAAAAAA0M/WaxSsZJ78l8/s320/Floor%2BDuring.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5659269809776970338" />

continue this for your first row, now with your second row, you will want to cut your first plank so it is not the same length as your starting plank (this will start your pattern) and continue matching your tongue and groove, this second row still may need someone holding the other planks in tightly, and periodically you should check your seams to make sure none of them have loosened while placing new planks. The second row you will have to not only match the top of the tongue and groove but also the side, so you want to match the top first, get it in there nice and tight and then do a little wiggle giggle and shake to get that side matched up. Then tighten it with your tapping block, continue your second and subsequent rows, when you get to the end of the row, you will want to measure, mark and cut your piece with a table saw and if you have trouble getting the piece in that is where the pulling bar is needed.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-gAlTFT4CMpY/TonD5nlXggI/AAAAAAAAAz8/qpy46gjCzfM/s320/how%2Bto%2Btool%2B2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5659269801413411330" />

Really it is just that simple, it takes time and patience, sometimes you make mistakes with the cuts but thats ok make sure you have a few extra planks. After doing this only one time, I feel confident enough to be able to do it again and again and help others too, I think everyone who is trying to save money should do this themselves, getting these installed from Home Depot or Lowes would have cost us about $4 or more a sq/ft and we got it for $1.10. We saved ourselves over $1000 dollars YAY!!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-EYp6s5egZXc/TonW_QVLXFI/AAAAAAAAA1k/353iXf48g_8/s320/before%2B1-1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5659290788971633746" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-QlwEb5oImmM/TonD5w3PQuI/AAAAAAAAA0E/aFuCp_Ll43Q/s320/Floor%2BAfter.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5659269803904287458" />

My Rags to Richeshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01013068629549156902noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3316931792543341216.post-60390130604301523622011-09-29T07:41:00.000-07:002011-09-30T09:43:02.763-07:00My First Tutorial: Upholstering a Dining Chair For As Little $$$ As Possible
Ok so please be patient with me this is my first tutorial, and I wanted to be really thorough but with only having my phone for pictures and taking care of my 3 crazy rug-rats, I didn't get a picture of everything I wanted to, but don't worry this is a tutorial on how to upholster a non upholstered dining chair, which means I still have more chairs to do so I will be able to add some more pictures and tweak this tutorial with the next chair.

So I started with this lovely rustic looking dinette set that my husband and I have had since we got married, we haven't ever really used it because we haven't lived in a house with a dining room yet. Yay for houses with dining rooms!!! Anyhow, we got this set from my sister who had it for about 5 years before us, so it is old, and my husband HATES it, it is extremely uncomfortable, they have to be the hardest chairs I have ever sat in...... So I decided they needed updating, and since playing with furniture is my favorite DIY project (so far) I got excited for this...

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ZChDdbdzx9s/ToSHN5poyTI/AAAAAAAAAtE/YgQHtycc4Wc/s320/Before%2BDinette.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5657795704767695154" />

First, I lightly sanded and primed all the chairs (no pic but thats pretty self explanatory right?), then I painted them with Rust-O-Leum Heirloom White (a color I found through blogging a lot of you out there use it, cause it is awesome and not stark white) I painted them with a small foam roller, I am new to this DIY stuff so a lot of you out there have probably used these before but this was my first time, and I am in LOVE they work so much better than rollers with nap, they leave a much cleaner finish!!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Mq2Fhj17lzM/ToSK1Qh78EI/AAAAAAAAAts/fXauC1QZg-Y/s320/roller.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5657799679459192898" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-UJxhQKXi_-A/ToSHOfpU7qI/AAAAAAAAAtM/h8QTySGdPY4/s320/Paint%2BHeirloom%2BWhite.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5657795714966941346" />

Ok so after the paint was dry, I was going to put a polyurethane finish on them but I am not certain that I am quite done with them yet because I might sand down the edges and do a dark glaze on the edges so I am waiting until I decide and I don't think I will decide until the table is done, so I can get a feel for how it will all come together. So the next step was to do something about those hard seats. I have REupholstered chairs but never upholstered something that wasn't originally made to be upholstered. With this seat, it hangs over just a bit from the base of the chair, so I needed to fill it, I simply used a hot glue gun and some poly-fill to do the trick.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-hl8uYKsGODU/ToSHO-UDeXI/AAAAAAAAAtU/PrfEOgXRNYY/s320/Poly%2Bfill.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5657795723199215986" />

I also added some poly-fill all over the top of the chair too (no pic) to add a little extra cushion. Then it was time for the foam. I cut the foam bigger than the actual seat because it needs to be tucked under and stapled, once you cut it out, place it on the seat and cut slits for the back part of the chair, make sure the foam covers the entire top of the seat with about 1/2 inch extra to spare on all sides except for the back (no foam need on the back).

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-5MRWLIjWXQA/ToSHP7WvT7I/AAAAAAAAAtk/ZJNlsnRKHrY/s320/Cut%2BFoam%2BBig.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5657795739585040306" />

Using a staple gun, staple the foam to the bottom of the lip, start by pulling tight and putting a staple in the very center of the front of the seat then pull tight on the opposite side (back) and put a staple in the center (my chair was a little different because the back didn't have a center, but this is how you upholster any other seat), next pull tight and staple the center of one of the sides, then pull tight and do the same to the opposite side (the key to upholstering is making sure everything is nice and tight) Next choose a center staple and use it as a starting point and start stapling from the middle out, continue on all four sides.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-VlnoJMvlteA/ToSUMVfbC1I/AAAAAAAAAt0/yEFDrVyVifI/s320/staple%2Bfoam.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5657809971532467026" />

Next you want to put dacron on the same way you did the foam (I actually didn't use dacron because we are so stinking poor, I found some cheap stretchy thin felt like material at Wal-Mart on clearance for 1.75/yd) but this time going all the way under the base of the chair, the reason for this step is to smooth out the edges of the foam and the transition from foam to poly-fill on the base (I think this step may have been unnecessary in my case because my fabric is so thick, but I didn't want to take chances)

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-PClQU1QVFBM/ToSHPaYspSI/AAAAAAAAAtc/geXGhL5CTLU/s320/smoothing%2Bfabric.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5657795730734884130" />

Now you are ready to put your fabric on (I got this fabric on clearance at Wal-Mart for 2.49/yd), and you do this the exact same way you put the dacron on, make sure you continue to pull tight with every staple you put in. Two parts of this tutorial that I wish I had pictures for are the corners, and how to cut for the back part of the chair, hopefully I can get pictures of those with the next chairs. To cut your fabric around the rungs of your chair cut a slit in the fabric that lines up exactly with the middle of the rung (picture to come later) then pull the fabric tight around the rung and staple (picture to come). The corners of an upholstered chair aren't as hard as they seem, and you really just need to play with them until you find the look you want (as far as where you want the pleats) I just fold them like the corner of a present.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-wmleXgYUsrQ/ToSX_Ld3kUI/AAAAAAAAAt8/Mmme3fvGeSs/s320/upholstery.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5657814143549804866" />

Now you are done, you just need to clean up the edges and hide the staples with some gimp.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Tk52Lj-TBlE/ToSYomRNODI/AAAAAAAAAuk/qXuNXfB-wa4/s320/after%2Bw%253Ao%2Bgimp.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5657814855119091762" />

Putting gimp on is my favorite part because it is so easy, and it brings the whole thing together, it makes it look so nice and you can have fun with colors and styles. Now I bought this gimp at Jo-Ann's for 2.99/yd (each of my chairs need 2 yards) which for me is really pricey, and I didn't especially love their selection, so if I find something cheaper and better I may redo the gimp (remember, I am trying to do this for as little money as possible). When we moved in we thought we could just shampoo the carpets and live with the carpet for a while but we were WRONG the shampooing had the opposite effect!!!! The carpet wouldn't dry because of the wet weather we were having so our home started to smell more an more like a dirty gym shoe, so we did what we had to do and ripped out the carpet and put in new floating floors (we did this ourselves instead of paying an arm and a leg for it and it really wasn't that hard). Now I lost my memory card for my camera during the move and my husband insists that it will turn up so I haven't gotten a new one just yet. This makes documenting my progress on the home a little more difficult. I have, however, taken a handful of pics with my cell phone. First I'll take you on a short tour of the home as it was when we first fell in love with its POTENTIAL!!!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Q1rcTf6hyM4/ToHKuZ7P_eI/AAAAAAAAArM/O458PuuFlT4/s320/before%2B1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5657025505536245218" />

And here is the AFTER (taken by my phone) of the floors and paint (which is not fully done because I am going to add moulding and boxes to it eventually).

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-k20e7HHaMgQ/ToHOaIoJSmI/AAAAAAAAAsE/Ui-OArhopNk/s320/After%2B1%2BLR.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5657029555341838946" />

Don't you especially love the gold drapes!!
We FINALLY did it!!!!! We closed on our house, it's official, we are home owners! It was a crazy roller coaster ride to get a home, and a ride I do not want to go on again (for a long time at least)! So we get to move in on Labor Day, and then let the projects begin, Oh ya!
